Introduction to the Academy
The classical world continues to be a source of fascination to young and old alike. Latin and Greek have enriched the lives of successive generations for over two thousand years.
The Classical Association of Ireland believe in continuing this tradition. We aim to provide classes in Greek and Latin to students who do not have access to them in their own schools, and who wish to take these subjects at Junior and Leaving Certificate level.
We are indebted to the Greeks for the creation of our Western Civilisation. They laid the foundations of our civilisation by giving us western philosophy, drama, architecture, sculpture, democracy, magnificent poetry and a flexible and fascinating language.
Over half the words in the English language come directly from Latin. The Romans were superb engineers. They have given us the basis of our legal system, and some outstanding prose and poetry.
Classes
Classes in Latin and Greek will be held from September 2008, commencing the week of Monday 15th September. They will run for twelve weeks up to Christmas, with four Saturday classes.
Classes will run after school, lasting for one and a half hours, from 4.30-6.00 p.m. (this may vary locally).
Pupils will be required to attend one session per week, plus one Saturday morning workshop of three hours each month. The students will also be expected to do some homework.
Course Material
Latin: Cambridge Latin Course
Greek: Athenaze Book 1
Further details on registration.
Junior Certificate Level 1 and 2
These classes are intended for 1st to 3rd year students leading to the Junior Certificate at the end of year 3. No previous knowledge is required.
Leaving Certificate
Classes are held during term time only, and lead, over two years, to Leaving Certificate qualification. They are intended primarily for students who have already taken Latin/Greek at Junior Certificate level. However others may also take the course.
I HAVE NEVER STUDIED LATIN or GREEK
A student who has no prior knowledge of Latin or Greek may take the Leaving Certificate Course starting in Transition Year, provided that they attend our two week summer school in June prior to commencing classes in September.
Classes are co-ordinated by the Classical Association and are taught by experienced teachers.
The cost is 400 euro per year or 150 euro per term.
